Screen Shots

Final Cut - Colour correction
  • What I've learnt: I've learnt how to change the tone and the feel of a video by simlpy adjusting the colour by either saturating or de-saturating the picture.
  • Why I've decided to edit my video this way: I decided to de-saturate the picture in my sequence to give a dark and uneasy feeling to my video.
  • Why I decided to add this effect: To create an ominous effect.

Final Cut - Overlap
  • What I've learnt: I've learnt how to overlap video's onto other video's.
  • Why I've decided to edit my video this way: I edited my video in this way so that it would give the impression of the protagonist is flashing back to certain events of the night before.
  • Why I decided to add this effect: i used this effect to give the flashbacks a fragmented feel to reflect the confusion the protagonist is feeling at this time.

 Sound Track Pro

  • What I've learnt: I've learnt how to make a sound track for a film and how to add it to my sequence.
  • Why I've decided to edit my video this way: Because i wanted to give the sequence an ominous feeling.
  • Why I decided to add this effect: I added the effect to create a tense atmosphere and the constant drone put in throughout the soundtrack creates this atmosphere as it adds anticipation.

 Motion Plus

  • What I've learnt: I've learnt how to use Motion Plus, how to make titles using the tools and how to apply the titles made on motion plus onto the film.
  • Why I've decided to edit my video this way: I chose the titles to be small, white and in a sophisticated font because it has been used in other thriller sequences (the openning to Enduring Love) and has the effect of no taking the eye off the actual film. I attempted to emulate these thriller sequences by doing this.
  • Why I decided to add this effect: In added the titles in this way because I hoped to not give the film a fast paced feel like in Se7en, but more of a relaxed unassuming feel.

 Final Cut - Title templates

  • What I've learnt: How to use templates to place my titles in the right position.
  • Why I've decided to edit my video this way: So that all of my titles appear in the same place so that the titles don't take the eye off the video.
  • Why I decided to add this effect: It has a suttle effect as they don't take the eye off the video due to the fading in and out of the titles.

Sound Research

Enduring Love

  • Diagetic or non- diagetic sound used: All diagetic
  • Does it match the mood: Yes. At the peaceful sound matches the surroundings.
  • How is it used to create suspense: Exaggerates all sounds.
  • What effect does it have: Creates feelings of tension and anticipation.

Se7en

  • Diagetic or non- diagetic sound used: All non-diagetic
  • Does it match the mood: Yes.
  • How is it used to create suspense:  It creates suspense as the fast pace of the music creates tension.
  • What effect does it have: It adds anticipation.

The Birds

  • Diagetic or non- diagetic sound used: Both.
  • Does it match the mood: Yes
  • How is it used to create suspense: The sounds of the antagonists, the birds, are enigma codes as hints are being dropped about the narrative.

I will use this research and take it with me into making the sound track for my sequence. For example, weighing up all the above factors, I will use a mixture of diagetic and non-diagetic sounds to create suspense. I will mainly use diagetic sound so that anticipation will be created out of the lack of sound. And I've learnt that the sounds used have to match the mood.

Enduring Love

  • Size of Font: Small.
  • Type of font: Sophisticated.
  • Colour of font: White.
  • Placement of text: Bottom left.
  • Duration on screen: 2 seconds.
  • Is it over a colour or over the video: Over the Video.
  • What do you see: The location where the narrative hangs.
  • Characters established: Protagonist and Antagonist established.
  • Other: Institution mentioned first (Pache)

From watching these three opening sequences, I will now use the techniques used in these openings in my own thriller opening. I will use the most popular colour of text which is white. I will make the font a decent size as the text will be over the video so the text wont take the attention away from the events in the sequence. I will mainly put my text in the bottom left hand corner as this wont draw the eye away from the events in the clip. And finally, I will do what every sequence did which was to mention the institution first.

Alterations to my Sequence

Myself and my partner Shaun decided to change the narrative structure of our video as we felt that there were aspects of the original idea that didn't set up the rest of the film as a proper story as it lacked enigma codes and didn’t follow the conventions set by other opening sequence to thrillers that we had studied. Our original opening sequence looked more like a trailer than an opening sequence as it didn’t introduce the protagonist and it didn’t set up a story.

The original idea was the protagonist was walking home from his workplace and realised he was being stalked by the antagonist who was playing games with him. The antagonist would leave a note for the protagonist and would tell him that the only way that he could survive was by finding eight pages hidden in the forest, this concept is similar to the game Slender which is one of the sources of my inspiration for the idea of the opening sequence. The protagonist would then run away trying to find the pages and would trip, bump his head and wake up the next day and wonder if he had imagined it or not. Then he would see the protagonist and the film title would role across the screen.

With the new idea, we have modified this storyline by starting with the protagonist waking up in the middle of the location and wondering if the events of last night were simply a nightmare. While walking through the forest he gets flashbacks of what has happened the night before and how he ran from the antagonist. The effect of this was to drop hints of the narrative to come and to create anticipation through the flash backs. Every time there is a flashback there is a loud jolt to shock the viewer. The sequence ends with the title of Willow rolling across the screen.

The new idea seems better than the other one as it is more of a build up of tension instead of just full on action. As I was setting the scene for my thriller film I felt it was better to go with the new option as it builds up the tension and sets the tone for the rest of the film.
